Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Programme

About the Event
Together We Heal Club organized a Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Programme on 12 August 2026 at the Pharmacy Block. The event aimed to educate students and staff about SMA, a rare genetic neuromuscular disorder that affects motor neurons and muscle function. The programme highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, treatment options, supportive care, and reducing stigma around rare diseases.
The role of Pharmacists
Bandla Aswani, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice, coordinated the event. A total of 25 participants attended the programme. Pharm D IV Year students served as resource persons and explained the causes, symptoms, inheritance patterns, and available treatments for SMA. They emphasized the role of pharmacists in patient education, medication counselling, and adherence support. Interactive discussions encouraged active participation and improved understanding of healthcare responsibilities.
Feedback
Participants gained valuable knowledge about SMA, including its causes, symptoms, and supportive care. They appreciated the focus on early recognition and referral, which can help patients receive timely medical consultation and treatment. Students expressed that the session enhanced their awareness of healthcare responsibilities, particularly in reducing stigma and supporting families affected by rare diseases. The interactive format made the programme engaging and impactful.
Conclusion
The organizers expressed gratitude to the participants for their active involvement. The event successfully promoted awareness about SMA and highlighted the vital role of pharmacists in patient care and community health. Together We Heal Club reaffirmed its commitment to organizing meaningful health awareness programmes for the benefit of students and society.
