Scientific Storage Practices: An Educational Visit to CWC, Renigunta

May 2

The Plant Health Club of MBU arranged an educational tour to the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) in Renigunta, Tirupati, on 2nd May, 2025. The main purpose of this visit was to educate the students about the importance of safe and efficient grain storage practices.

Dr. P. Maheswara Reddy, faculty coordinator, and other faculty members, including Dr. Kasi Rao and Dr. G. Gayathri from the School of Agriculture, led the initiative. A total of 110 students from the II and  III year B.Sc.(Ag.) program participated in this educational event.

The State Warehouse Corporation and Central Warehouse Corporation play a crucial role in maintaining the quality and safety of grains and seeds through carefully planned measures. These organizations enforce rigorous storage hygiene practices, including regular warehouse cleaning, disinfecting storage facilities, and following standardized protocols for stacking and packaging.

During the visit, the warehouse manager provided a detailed overview of the procedures followed upon the arrival of paddy stock at the facility. He explained that the process begins with weighing the stock using certified weighbridges, followed by the issuance of a Goods Receipt (GR). Next, samples are tested for moisture content, ensuring it falls within the optimal range of 10-12%. If the moisture level meets the required standards, quality sampling and inspection are conducted in accordance with the guidelines set by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) or the state government.

The manager went on to explain the random sampling method, which involves collecting small grain samples from randomly selected paddy bags. These samples are then divided into four equal parts, while one portion used to check for pest infestation. Once the stock is approved, it is systematically arranged in storage godowns with adequate ventilation. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of maintaining accurate records, conducting regular fumigation, and implementing pest control measures to preserve grain quality.

Fumigation is carried out using aluminum phosphide tablets, applied at the recommended dosage of 9g per ton of paddy to prevent insect infestation. He also highlighted that the stock remains under continuous monitoring and is issued only after thorough documentation when orders are received. The visit offered students valuable hands-on exposure, deepening their understanding of scientific storage and large-scale warehouse management practices.
