The Debate Society of MBU organized a thought-provoking debate competition on 16 October 2025, from 2:30 PM to 3:45 PM at Room No. 507, MNS Block. The topic of the debate was “Climate Change Action: Should India Prioritize Economic Growth or Environmental Protection?” The event was held and brought together students from various branches of B.Tech., creating a vibrant space for discussion and reflection.
The aim of the event was to encourage students to think critically about one of the most pressing global challenges—climate change—and its intersection with economic development. By engaging with both sides of the argument, participants were guided to explore the complexities of sustainable growth and the responsibilities of nations in shaping a better future.
Dr. Sudipta Ghosh, Assistant Professor in the Department of English, coordinated the event. A total of 50 students participated, each bringing their own perspectives and energy to the discussion. The participants performed with great enthusiasm, presenting well-researched arguments and responding to counterpoints with clarity and confidence. Their teamwork and respectful engagement added depth to the debate.
The session unfolded with two teams presenting opposing views. The Proposition argued for prioritizing economic growth, highlighting the need for job creation and poverty reduction, while emphasizing that a strong economy could support future green technologies. The Opposition stressed the urgency of climate action, pointing to the long-term damage of environmental neglect and advocating for immediate investment in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure. The debate was lively, informative, and deeply engaging.
Participants walked away with a richer understanding of how climate policy and economic goals are intertwined. They learned about the importance of innovation, the role of individual and institutional responsibility, and how sustainable development can be both a challenge and an opportunity.
The organizers expressed heartfelt gratitude to all the participants for their enthusiastic involvement and thoughtful contributions. The Debate Society reaffirmed its commitment to hosting more such events that inspire dialogue, deepen understanding, and connect academic learning with global concerns.
