Unlocking Innovation: Students Step into the World of Free and Open Source Software

September 22

The FOSS Club, the Department of Data Science of MBU, organized an insightful session titled “A Beginner’s Walkthrough into Using and Building Open Software” on 22nd September 2025. The event brought together curious minds eager to explore the world of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). The session was part of the department’s ongoing efforts to introduce students to emerging technologies and encourage hands-on learning in a collaborative environment.

The main aim of the session was to help students understand the basics of open software and its growing importance in today’s digital world. The program focused on how open-source platforms empower users to learn, share, and build together. It also highlighted how FOSS encourages innovation and supports a global community of developers who contribute to meaningful projects.

The session was coordinated by Ms. T. Ramya, Assistant Professor in the Department of Data Science. With her guidance, around 50 students actively participated in the event. Their enthusiasm was evident throughout the session, as they engaged with the resource persons, asked thoughtful questions, and showed genuine interest in learning how open software works. The hands-on nature of the session helped them grasp the concepts with clarity and confidence.

During the session, students were introduced to the process of installing and using open-source tools. They also learned how to contribute to open-source projects and understood the significance of licensing models and community collaboration. Practical demonstrations made the learning experience more relatable and enjoyable. The resource persons emphasized how open software can be used not just in academics, but also in professional and personal projects.

By the end of the session, students walked away with a clear understanding of what FOSS is, why it matters, and how they can be part of this global movement. They gained practical skills and felt inspired to explore open platforms beyond the classroom. The session sparked curiosity and encouraged them to think creatively and collaboratively. The organizers expressed heartfelt thanks to all the participants for their active involvement and positive energy.

While students are actively engaged in the session, the faculty coordinator provides oversight and guidance on FOSS through the PowerPoint presentation.
Participants are immersing themselves in hands-on exploration of open-source platforms, discovering how these tools foster learning, sharing, and collective creation.
