Studying Soil Microbes for Sustainable Agriculture

About the Event
The Science Club organized an activity titled “Invisible Life Beneath Our Feet: A Hands-On Study of Soil Microbes” on 03 -02 2026. It was held in Room 1401, Pharmacy Block of MBU. The program aimed to provide practical exposure to soil microbiology. And it also highlighted the importance of soil microorganisms. The participants explored microbial diversity and understood their role in agriculture and environmental health.
Gaining practical experience
The event was coordinated by Ms. S. Vasiha Anjum, Assistant Professor, Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences. A total of 35 IV Semester B.Sc. Biotechnology students participated actively in it. Students engaged in soil sample collection, serial dilution, plating techniques, incubation, and observation of microbial colonies. The activity was well organized and ensured that every participant gained practical experience. The program emphasized the importance of soil microbes in sustaining ecosystems and supporting agriculture.
Key Takeaways by the Participants
Students gained hands-on experience in soil sample processing and microbiological techniques. They appreciated the opportunity to observe microbial colonies directly in the laboratory. The activity enhanced their practical skills, observation ability, and scientific curiosity. Participants expressed that the session improved their understanding of soil microbial diversity and ecological importance. Feedback highlighted that the event was informative, engaging, and highly relevant to their academic growth. The event concluded with gratitude expressed by the organizers to the participants for their active involvement. The Science Club appreciated the enthusiasm and curiosity shown by the students. The program achieved its objectives by enhancing practical knowledge and motivating students to explore microbiology further. The organizers acknowledged the importance of student participation and encouraged them to continue learning through hands-on experiences.
