Social Media and Youth: A Debate on Empowerment vs. Misinformation

August 28

The Debate Society of Mohan Babu University organized a thought-provoking debate competition titled “The Impact of Social Media: Empowering Youth or Spreading Misinformation” on 28th August 2025, from 1:45 PM to 3:45 PM in Room No. 507, MNS Block. The event brought together enthusiastic students from different departments to share their views on one of the most pressing issues of our time. The main aim of the debate was to explore how social media affects young people—whether it helps them grow through access to information, civic engagement, and community building, or whether it causes harm by spreading misinformation, encouraging cyberbullying, and deepening divisions.

Dr. Sudipta Ghosh, Asst. Professor of English, coordinated the event with great care and dedication. A total of 42 students participated, each bringing their own perspective and energy to the discussion. The teams debated with clarity and confidence, using real-life examples like youth-led climate movements and viral misinformation to support their arguments.

The debate was conducted in a respectful and engaging manner. One team spoke about how social media empowers youth by building leadership and digital skills, while the other team highlighted its risks to mental health and truth. The exchange of ideas was lively and meaningful, encouraging everyone to think deeply and listen with an open mind.

Participants walked away with a deeper understanding of how to use social media responsibly. They learned the importance of verifying information and saw how online platforms can be used for positive change when handled wisely.

The organizers expressed heartfelt thanks to all the participants and attendees for making the event a success. They appreciated the students’ enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions, which helped create a space for honest dialogue and learning.
