The Civil & Sustainability Club, the Department of Civil Engineering of MBU, organized a guest lecture on “Environment and Sustainable Development” on 18th August 2025, from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM, at the Civil Seminar Hall. The session brought together students and faculty for an engaging and thought-provoking experience. The lecture aimed to help students understand the changing meaning of development and the importance of sustainability in today’s world. It focused on protecting the environment, promoting social equity, and ensuring a better future for generations to come.
The session was coordinated by Dr. Doma Hemanth Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering. A total of 57 undergraduate students from the III, V, and VI semesters of the Civil Engineering branch participated in the event. The students showed great interest and actively engaged with the ideas shared during the lecture, making the session lively and meaningful.
Dr. Dheeraj Rathore, Assistant Professor at the School of Environment and Sustainable Development, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, was the resource person. He explained how development has evolved over time and highlighted the urgent need for sustainable practices. He discussed key global challenges like population growth, resource exploitation, and climate change. He also introduced six core principles of sustainability and shared examples from Indian Knowledge Systems such as eco-friendly farming, Vastu Shastra, Ayurveda, and traditional water management. These examples helped students connect modern sustainability ideas with age-old wisdom.
Students gained a deeper understanding of how sustainability touches every part of life—from agriculture and architecture to health and community living. The session encouraged them to think critically, explore interdisciplinary ideas, and consider new approaches to research and learning.
At the end of the session, the organizers thanked all the participants for their enthusiastic involvement. Their curiosity and active participation made the event a success and added great value to the learning experience.
