Microscope Marvels: Exploring Insect Worlds Through Lenses

October 15

The Plant Health Club of the School of Agriculture organized a hands-on training session titled “Microscope Marvels – Lab-based hands-on session observing insect morphology” on 15th October 2025. The event was held at the Entomology Laboratory, Room No: 2307, Civil Block, from 3:00 to 4:30 P.M. It was specially designed for II Year B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture students to explore the fascinating world of insect morphology through practical learning.

The main aim of the session was to give students real-time experience in handling compound and stereo zoom microscopes. It focused on helping them understand the different parts and functions of these instruments and how to use them effectively. The activity also introduced students to digital imaging tools, enabling them to observe and analyze insect structures with precision. The broader goal was to build technical and analytical skills that are essential for academic success, research, and future studies in entomology.

The session was coordinated by Dr. P. Maheswara Reddy, Assistant Professor,  the School of Agriculture. A total of 42 students participated with great enthusiasm. They showed keen interest in learning and performed the tasks with curiosity and care. The coordinator guided them patiently, ensuring that each student got hands-on exposure and understood the techniques thoroughly.

During the session, students practiced using microscopes to observe insect specimens, identify morphological features, and measure them using digital tools. They learned how to handle the instruments correctly, adjust magnification, and capture images for further analysis. The activity was conducted in a friendly and supportive environment, making it easy for students to ask questions and clarify doubts.

Participants shared that the session helped them understand insect taxonomy and diversity better. They felt more confident in identifying pests and understanding their role in agriculture. Many students mentioned that the experience would be useful for their academic projects, competitive exams, and future research. The practical exposure also highlighted the importance of eco-friendly pest management and how such knowledge can benefit farmers.

The organizers expressed heartfelt thanks to all participants for their active involvement. They appreciated the students’ enthusiasm and willingness to learn. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with students requesting more such sessions in the future. The event successfully blended theory with practice, making learning meaningful and memorable.

As students are actively engaged in the session, the faculty member provides oversight and guidance in using microscopes to observe insect specimens

The students are actively participating in hands-on training on handling the instruments correctly, adjust magnification, and capture images for further analysis.
