FOSS Club-18-02-2026-Git Challenge1

Key Emphasis

The FOSS Club, the School of Computing, organized the “Mini Git Challenge” on 18 Feb 2026, at Room No. 513 in the MNS Block. The challenge aimed at strengthening students’ practical knowledge of Git version control and collaborative workflows. Students practiced fundamental Git operations like initializing repositories, staging, committing, branching, merging, and pushing code.

Working in Teams

Ms. T. Ramya, Assistant Professor, the faculty coordinator, coordinated the event with great dedication. A total of 50 students actively participated in the event with enthusiasm. The students worked individually and in teams to complete planned tasks within the allotted time. The tasks simulated real-world development scenarios and highlighted the importance of version control systems. They practiced creating repositories, managing branches, resolving conflicts, and maintaining clean commit histories. The event emphasized meaningful commit messages and effective use of GitHub and GitLab platforms. This activity helped students understand the need of collaboration in the modern software development.

Hands-on Learning Approach

The Club members gained practical exposure to Git and improved their confidence in using version control systems. They also appreciated the hands-on learning approach and found the tasks relevant to industry practices. They highlighted the importance of branching, merging, and conflict resolution in collaborative projects. Feedback suggested adding beginner tutorials and advanced tasks in coming sessions. They also recommended competitive elements like leader boards to make the challenge more engaging. The organizers noted that the event was well structured and smoothly coordinated. The challenge successfully promoted problem-solving skills and teamwork among the participants. The event achieved its objective of enhancing collaborative development skills. The organizers also expressed gratitude to all the participants for their active involvement and positive feedback. The event strengthened the participants’ technical abilities and optimistic adoption of industry best practices.
