From Rough to Refined: Practical Insights into Precision Grinding

December 23, 2025

The Creative Association of Mechanical Engineering Students (CAMS) organized an event titled “From Rough to Refined” on 23rd December 2025. The programme was conducted in the Department of Mechanical Engineering with the active participation of students from I and II B.Tech Mechanical Engineering. The event was planned to provide both theoretical and practical exposure to grinding operations, and it was carried out with great enthusiasm and energy.

The event was aimed at helping students understand the working principles of horizontal surface grinding machines. It also focused on teaching them how to select suitable grinding wheels and operating parameters for different materials. Beyond theory, the programme was designed to give students hands‑on experience in workpiece setup, safe grinding practices, and achieving improved dimensional accuracy and surface finish. The larger goal was to connect classroom learning with real‑world industrial applications, showing students how grinding plays a vital role in precision manufacturing.

The programme was convened byDr. D. Gowthami, Assistant Professor and CAMS Coordinator, with support from student coordinators. A good number of students—both first‑year and second‑year Mechanical Engineering participants—joined the session. Their performance was admirable, as they showed keen interest in the demonstrations, asked thoughtful questions, and actively engaged in the practical exercises.

The activity was conducted in a structured manner. Students were first introduced to the machine components and safety practices. This was followed by demonstrations on grinding wheel selection and process parameters. Later, participants were given the chance to perform grinding operations themselves. They observed how controlled grinding improved surface finish and dimensional accuracy, which gave them a clear sense of the importance of precision in manufacturing. The hands‑on approach made the session lively and meaningful, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

The key takeaways for the participants were significant. They gained confidence in handling grinding machines, learned how to select appropriate wheels and parameters, and understood the importance of safety in machining. More importantly, they realized how grinding contributes to industrial production and how these skills can enhance their employability in the manufacturing sector.

At the end of the programme, the organizers expressed heartfelt gratitude to all the participants for their active involvement and enthusiasm. Their cooperation and interest made From Rough to Refined a memorable and impactful event, and CAMS looks forward to organizing more such practical learning sessions in the future.

Students were actively observing machine components, adhering to safety protocols, and gaining insights from demonstrations on grinding wheel selection and process parameters
