From Code to Creation: A FOSS-Powered App Development Workshop

The Free Open Source Software Club (FOSS), School of Computing and Data Science, Mohan Babu University organized a hands-on session titled “App Development with FOSS Tools” on 6th November 2025, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM in Room No. 516, MNS Block. The event brought together enthusiastic learners and tech-savvy minds to explore the world of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in app development.

The session was designed to introduce students to the power and possibilities of building mobile applications using open-source platforms. It aimed to help participants understand how FOSS tools can be used to create cost-effective, customizable, and secure applications while encouraging collaborative learning and innovation.

The event was coordinated by Ms. T. Ramya, Assistant Professor, Computing and Data Science. A total of 50 students actively participated in the workshop session. Their energy and curiosity were evident throughout the hour, as they engaged with the resource person, asked thoughtful questions, and showed genuine interest in the tools and techniques being discussed.

Dr. C. Sivakumar, Assistant Professor from the Department of Data Science, acted as the resource person for the session. He explained the importance of using FOSS tools like Android Studio, Flutter, React Native, and Apache Cordova for cross-platform development. He also highlighted the role of Git and GitHub in managing code and teamwork. The session included practical insights into backend tools like MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite. The activity was conducted in an interactive format, making it easy for students to grasp the concepts and see real-world applications.

Participants walked away with a clear understanding of how FOSS tools empower developers to build apps that are not only innovative but also affordable and secure. They appreciated the openness of the tools and the spirit of global collaboration they promote. The session also touched upon how such practices align with Sustainable Development Goals by fostering creativity and strengthening global connectivity.

At the end of the session, the organizers expressed heartfelt thanks to all the participants for their active involvement. They also extended their gratitude to Dr. C. Sivakumar for sharing his expertise and making the session both informative and inspiring.
