Debating the Future: A Student Debate on Ethics, Science, and Society

September 1

The Science Club,  the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Mohan Babu University, organized a thought-provoking debate competition on the topic “Should Genetic Engineering Be Legal for Humans?” on 1st September 2025. The event was held in Room No. 716 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM and brought together curious minds for a lively exchange of ideas. The main aim of the debate was to encourage students to think critically about the ethical, scientific, and social dimensions of genetic engineering. It was designed to help them sharpen their analytical thinking, improve communication skills, and become more aware of the fast-growing field of biotechnology and its impact on society.

The event was coordinated by Ms. S. Vasiha Anjum, Assistant Professor, who guided the session with clarity and enthusiasm. A total of 53 students participated in the competition, showcasing impressive preparation and confidence. Their performance reflected a deep understanding of the topic and a genuine interest in exploring both sides of the argument.

Participants were divided into two teams—one supporting the motion and the other opposing it. Those in favor highlighted the potential of genetic engineering to eliminate hereditary diseases, enhance human abilities, and improve overall quality of life. The opposing team raised important concerns about ethics, misuse, inequality, and long-term risks. The debate was marked by strong rebuttals, respectful exchanges, and well-researched points, making it a truly engaging experience.

Students walked away with valuable takeaways. They gained deeper insights into the complexities of genetic engineering, improved their public speaking and debating skills, and learned how science connects with ethics, law, and society. Many expressed interest in exploring bioethics and biotechnology further in their academic journey.

The organizers thanked all participants for their active involvement and thoughtful contributions. Special congratulations were extended to N. Rohith, III Year DBCS, who won the first prize for his outstanding performance. The event was a meaningful step toward nurturing informed, responsible, and articulate future scientists.
