Debate on Innovation vs Sustainability in Design: A Student Perspective

December 22, 2025

The CAD Club, the Department of Mechanical Engineering of MBU organized a debate on the theme “Innovation vs Sustainability in Design” on 22nd December 2025 in Room No. 2707 from 3.30 PM to 4.30 PM. It was a lively session that brought together students of II B.Tech Mechanical Engineering to discuss one of the most pressing challenges in modern engineering. The debate was aimed at nurturing critical thinking and communication skills among students. It encouraged them to reflect on contemporary design challenges and to understand the balance between technological advancement and sustainable practices. The objective was not only to sharpen their argumentative skills but also to make them aware of the ethical and social responsibilities that engineers carry when designing solutions for society.

The session was coordinated by Dr. S. Lakshmi Narayana, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. A total of 34 students participated in the debate, forming teams that represented both sides of the argument. The participants performed with great energy and confidence. They presented well‑researched points, supported their arguments with examples from real engineering practices, and engaged in healthy discussions. Their ability to analyze issues from multiple perspectives showed their growing maturity as future engineers.

The activity was conducted in a structured manner, with teams presenting their arguments one after another. The debate focused on the importance of innovation in driving progress and the necessity of sustainability in ensuring long‑term well‑being. Students discussed material choices, lifecycle analysis, and environmental impacts, while also considering economic and social dimensions.

The key takeaways for the participants were significant. They gained improved skills in logical reasoning and public speaking, along with a deeper understanding of sustainable design principles. The debate helped them appreciate the importance of green materials, ethical responsibility, and the role of engineers in shaping a sustainable future. Most importantly, they realized that innovation and sustainability are not opposing ideas but complementary forces.

The organizers expressed their heartfelt gratitude to all the participants for their active involvement. Their enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions made the event a success. The CAD Club looks forward to hosting more such sessions that inspire students to think critically and act responsibly in their academic and professional journeys.

With great enthusiasm, students representing their teams presented well-researched arguments, responded to counterpoints with clarity, and showed great enthusiasm.

Brimming with energy, students presented strong arguments, responded to challenges with clarity, and sustained their enthusiasm until the end.
