AI and the Future of Work: A Student Debate on Jobs and Automation

November 5

The Debate Society of MBU organized a thought-provoking debate competition titled “AI and Automation: Will Technology Create More Jobs Than It Destroys?” on November 5, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM at Room No. 4101, New Academic Block. The session was designed to spark meaningful conversations around technology and its impact on the future of work.

The aim of the event was to help students think critically and express their ideas clearly. By engaging in structured debate, participants were encouraged to explore both sides of a complex issue, understand its broader implications, and develop the confidence to speak in front of an audience.

Dr. Sudipta Ghosh, Assistant Professor in the Department of English, coordinated the event. A total of 39 students took part in the debate. Their performance was impressive—teams presented well-researched arguments, responded to counterpoints with clarity, and showed great enthusiasm throughout the session. The energy in the room was high, and the audience was deeply engaged.

The debate was conducted in a structured format, with teams arguing for and against the motion. Those in favour highlighted how technology has historically created new job roles and industries, while those against raised concerns about job displacement and inequality. The discussion was rich, balanced, and full of insights, making it a valuable learning experience for everyone involved.

Participants walked away with stronger communication and public speaking skills. They learned how to build logical arguments, think quickly during rebuttals, and present technical ideas in a persuasive manner. Many students expressed a deeper understanding of the ethical and economic aspects of automation and felt more prepared to engage with such topics in the future.

The Debate Society extended heartfelt thanks to all participants for their spirited involvement. Their commitment and curiosity made the event a success and reinforced the university’s mission to nurture thoughtful, future-ready individuals.
