Established in 2011, the Department of Mechanical Engineering began with a B.Tech. program admitting 60 students, later expanded to accommodate 180. Accredited by NBA, our B.Tech program has earned recognition as one of the premier Mechanical Engineering programs in South India. With 15 academic laboratories and a Micromachining research center, equipped with cutting-edge scientific instruments and machinery, our department is committed to providing a top-tier educational experience. Collaborating with APSSDC-Siemens, APSSDC-Dassault Systems, and APSSDC-Robotics, we’ve established eight skill development laboratories, enhancing hands-on learning and industry readiness.

Our department aims to cultivate high-caliber graduates through rigorous coursework and innovative research endeavors. Mechanical engineering is a field ripe with opportunities, fostering both individual growth and societal advancement. B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering, a four-year undergraduate program, equips the students with sound knowledge of theoretical and practical experiences in the core subjects of Mechanical Engineering such as Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and allied areas. Mechanical engineering is a broad field that encompasses everything from primarily aesthetic design to highly technical scientific research for the creation of products, machines, energy-efficient systems, and technological systems for the benefit of society.

Mechanical Engineering Laboratories at a Glance

  • Engineering Workshop
    As the backbone of the industrial environment, workshop practice equips students with foundational technical hand skills such as fitting, welding, sheet metal, house wiring, among others. Students gain experience on the usage of various hand tools, 3D printing, two-wheeler demonstration, power tools, machine tools, etc.
  • Computer-Aided Design Lab
    CAD lab provides students with hands-on training in modern engineering design practices and virtual testing using industry-standard modeling and simulation software. Students learn the usage of commercial CAD and FEA software to create detailed part models and assemblies, followed by basic simulations such as structural, thermal, and CFD analyses.
  • Computer-Aided Manufacturing Lab
    Adhering to the present industrial requirements, CAM lab familiarizes students with the advances in Computer Aided Manufacturing technologies, Automation, and Mechatronics. Students learn CNC programming and operation, and technologies like FMS, AGV, Robotics, Mechatronics, Automated Conveyor Systems, etc.
  • Material Science and Engineering Lab
    The Material Science lab aims to educate students on the relationship between the material structure and the material properties of various materials. Students examine the changes in material microstructure caused by heat treatment processes and assess the resulting properties. The lab also showcases atomic structures of materials and probable imperfections on prototypes.
  • Manufacturing Technology Lab
    Manufacturing technology lab introduces students to the common processes used in industries for manufacturing components. Students gain hands-on expertise in moulding, casting, arc/gas welding, using sand testing equipment, and sheet metal forming processes.
  • Dynamics of Machinery Lab
    The Dynamics of Machinery lab demonstrates practically the principles governing the motion of mechanical systems. Students perform experiments involving gyroscopic effects, force balancing, vibrations, and dynamic response. They also utilize instrumentation tools like FFT analyzers and motorized setups to evaluate system behavior under various operating conditions.
  • Machine Tools Lab
    Machine Tools lab is equipped with the common machines used in industries for manufacturing parts by material removal process in a controlled manner. Students acquire skills in operating state-of-the-art conventional machines such as lathes, milling machines, grinding machines, drilling machines, shaping machines, etc.
  • Engineering Metrology Lab
    Prioritizing both experimental and theoretical measurements, the Engineering Metrology lab enlists various kinds of instruments and measurement methods for calibration and evaluation of the accuracy and precision of several components. Students experiment with instruments like Vernier, Micrometer, Dial gauge, Profile projector, Surface roughness tester, etc.
  • Thermal Engineering Lab
    Thermal Engineering lab enables students to explore the performance, combustion characteristics, and energy analysis of thermal systems through direct experimentation. Students are provided with hands-on exposure to internal combustion engines, air compressors, basic refrigeration systems, fuel properties, and real-world thermal equipment.
  • Heat Transfer Lab
    Heat Transfer lab practically demonstrates the fundamental modes of heat transfer, like conduction, convection, and radiation, and presents their applications. Students work with experimental setups that simulate steady-state and transient heat flow, observe natural and forced convection, study radiation properties, and analyze phase change processes in heat exchangers.
  • Micromachining Research Centre
    The Micromachining Research Centre supports academic and industrial research in the field of non-traditional and precision manufacturing processes. Research is focused on fabricating intricate features on miniature components used in electronics, biomedical devices, microfluidics, and aerospace applications. The lab is equipped with advanced micro-machining tools and enables students/researchers to conduct detailed investigations into micromachining processes.

The Mechanical Engineering is rapidly transforming to meet the technological and environmental challenges of the 21st century. Today, it goes far beyond traditional machines, embracing intelligent systems, sustainable solutions, and high-precision manufacturing. In response to these global trends, our university is deeply engaged in advanced research, offering students hands-on exposure to emerging technologies and real-world applications.

One of the key highlights of our department is the Micromachining Research Centre, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to precision manufacturing at micro and nano scales. This centre allows students and researchers to work on cutting-edge technologies such as micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), laser micromachining, and ultra-precision machining. These techniques are crucial in the development of components used in aerospace, biomedical devices, microelectronics, and advanced robotics. Through active research projects and lab training, students gain practical skills that align with the future demands of high-tech industries.

The Micromachining Research Centre, established within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mohan Babu University is a dedicated facility focused on advanced manufacturing research and micro-fabrication technologies. Spread across 900 sq. ft. of fully air-conditioned lab space, the center is designed to support precision machining, experimental analysis, and high-end characterization work.

The facility houses state-of-the-art micro-machining equipment and is fully equipped for:

  • Imaging and data acquisition

In addition to micromachining, our mechanical engineering program is closely aligned with current global research trends, including the integration of artificial intelligence into mechanical systems, sustainable energy solutions, additive manufacturing (3D printing), and smart materials. Students are encouraged to explore interdisciplinary areas such as robotics, biomechanics, and computational modeling, enabling them to develop innovative solutions for complex problems.

  • Dr. B. Vishnu Vardhana Naidu received “Distinction Award” for successful completion of IUCEE International Educator Certification Programme Spring 2024 with 94%, dt. July, 2024.
  • Dr. B. Vishnu Vardhana Naidu received certificate of appreciation for valuable time contributed as a faculty mentor and assistant faculty for grading from IUCEE. July, 2024.
  • Dr. N. Manikandan, Professor has been recognized in the prestigious Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientists List for the calendar year 2024.   • Dr. K. Lakshmi Kala, Asst.
