The ToT club of MBU successfully conducted an educational field demonstration for students on Stay Safe with Pesticides on April 21, 2025, from 02:30 PM to 03:30 PM in Narasingapurm Farm. The primary goal of the demonstration was to equip participants with essential knowledge on including safe handling and application of pesticides, proper operation of spraying equipment, and precautionary measures to follow to prevent health and environmental hazards for promoting sustainable farming.
It commenced with an introductory address by a student volunteer. Dr. Mallu and Dr. A. Nikhitha, faculty coordinators, explained to the students of B.Sc. (Ag) about the fundamental classification of pesticides, such as insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and rodenticides, based on their target organisms. They also outlined their mode of action and highlighted common health hazards that can arise from improper handling and exposure, such as skin irritation, respiratory issues, and long-term chronic effects. The session emphasized the importance of understanding these risks to practice safe and responsible pesticide use in real-world agricultural settings.
The session proceeded with a hands-on demonstration where the students observed the correct methods of mixing, spraying, and handling the pesticides. The faculty members advocated to them the precautionary measures to follow, including wearing personal protective equipment such as gloves and masks, following recommended dosage guidelines to avoid overuse, and proper disposal methods for pesticide containers to minimize environmental contamination.
The field demonstration successfully enhanced students’ understanding of pesticide safety, regulations, and practical applications. The event reinforced the importance of responsible pesticide use in ensuring sustainable agriculture while protecting human health and the ecosystem.
This initiative by the ToT Club of MBU highlights the institution’s commitment to education, awareness, and agricultural sustainability. More such interactive sessions are anticipated in the future to further strengthen students’ expertise in safe farming practices.
